If Only Icarus…

If only Icarus were amongst us still
At the circus of the earth, he’d tell us
What it’s like at the circus
of the air. Above

At the circus below
Down there, I’d tell him: Icarus!
Earthbound, I clown with other
Wingless clowns
We pretend we can fly, we teach it
Even
We pretend we take leaps of
Faith. The fact is, bird:
We’re afraid of flyin’

If only Icarus could tell us, clowns,
The winged existence he promised,
No point of no return deliverance,
We’d surely prepare our nest escape

Icarus,
Only in my dreams do I break free
from the tyranny of Gravity
in perfect celestial timin’
I’d catch the cosmic flyin’
Trapeze

Kairos: The Entry Point

But I wake up clownishly asleep
Icarus did not his promise keep

Mystificarusion…turning point

Wingless still, I’ll have to wing it

If only ‘carus were truly a bird,
Curse of curses I ceaselessly curse,
Aloft, he’d come back swiftly to
Earth
For a bird of the air shall carry
The voice
And that which hath wings shall tell
The matter

If  we use the metaphor of the diving board for people failing to follow through on their goals, we can find on this diving board 2 types of people :

  • The Icaruses.  They take the leap without looking first.  It’s as though they can’t help themselves (See Icarus Lessons). These are few and far between.
  • The commitment phobics, more numerous and in increase as life’s possibilities increase (a paradox); who seek all the guarantees and never get to take the leap.

Pharmakos: Aaron Swartz

I did not want to start my Icarus Lessons on a tragic note, but the untimely death of Aaron Swartz stroke a cord in me. And below is the first post of this series.

An Unequal Combat

I did not know him before the announcement of his death, on a post left on one of the wordpress blogs, but he touched me deeply with his David and Goliath battle. Continue reading

Metaphors : Coaching with “right brain” modalities

Any heuristic that uses images/metaphors for self-understanding and awareness constitute a “right brain” modality. So all these modalities share a common language: the language of metaphors, with dreams as the paradigm for this language. Continue reading
